Morning Fire Temporarily Closes Smiley Lane McDonald's
COLUMBIA, MO (December 6, 2014) - At 10:35 a.m. Saturday, December 06, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported commercial structure fire at 1012 Smiley Lane, the McDonald’s restaurant in north Columbia. Employees called 9-1-1 reporting a fire in the kitchen.
Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 10:38 to find the building evacuated of customers and employees. Crews entered the restaurant and located the fire in a commercial cooking unit and the exhaust system above the unit. The unit’s automatic fire suppression system had activated and was containing the fire to the equipment immediately above the fryer. Firefighters used handheld fire extinguishers designed to fight cooking oil fires to complete the extinguishment. Crews then used fans to ventilate smoke from the building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a preliminary damage estimate for the affected equipment and supplies is $15,000. “It is too early to tell how long the business will be closed but certainly through the lunch hour and afternoon” said Battalion Chief John Metz. Smiley Lane was closed for approximately thirty minutes while crews worked at the scene. There were no injuries.
Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident and were on the scene for approximately one hour.
