Columbia City Council Votes to Amend Chapter 11 of the City Code as it Relates to Tobacco and E-Cigarettes.
COLUMBIA, MO (December 16, 2014) - COLUMBIA, MO - In a 6-1 vote, the Columbia City Council voted to raise the legal tobacco and e-cigarette sale age to 21 years old. The Council also voted to include e-cigarettes to Columbia’s definition of products included in the indoor air policy, therefore prohibiting use of e-cigarettes in public places. The changes to the ordinance go into effect immediately. The Columbia Police Department will continue to enforce this ordinance, with its new additions, as it has done previously, utilizing compliance checks as a means of enforcement and responding to complaints.
In an effort to increase awareness of the changes to Chapter 11 of the City Code as it relates to tobacco and e-cigarettes, the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) will work with the State of Missouri and its contractors to properly identify those retailers within the City of Columbia that are impacted by the ordinance changes. Additionally, PHHS will work with local coalitions to educate the public and further communicate with retailers regarding the changes.
For more information regarding the enforcement of the amendments to Chapter 11 of the City Code as it relates to tobacco and e-cigarettes, contact the Columbia Police Department at (573) 817-5049 or (573) 874-7448. For more information regarding the public and retailer education, contact the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services at (573) 874-7632.
