Jefferson Middle School Electrical Service Damaged by Fire
COLUMBIA, MO (February 3, 2014) - At 5:58 a.m. Monday, February 03, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a Commercial Structure Fire at 713 Rogers Street, Jefferson Middle School. Several 9-1-1 callers reported hearing a loud bang and seeing sparks and smoke coming from the roof of the Middle School.
Columbia Firefighters arrived on the scene at 6:02 a.m. to find a large electrical fire on the exterior of the building’s north-east corner. Firefighters isolated the area, notified the power company, and awaited their arrival to shut the power off to the affected area. Crews confirmed there was no fire in the building, just on the outside at one of the building’s main electrical service entrances.
Once Columbia Water & Light was able to shut the power off, the fire extinguished itself. While there was no fire damage in the building, there was light smoke throughout the structure. Crews are working to remove the smoke odor. Electricians working for the Columbia Public Schools are assessing the damage. Because the building is without electricity, the building is also without heat. The cause of the electrical malfunction is not known at this time.
Fire crews were on the scene for approximately two hours. Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident.
