Snow Operations Update - Tuesday, February 4, 9:30pm

COLUMBIA, MO (February 4, 2014) - Road crews were out all day plowing priority routes and maintaining passable conditions on Columbia's primary roads, but they definitely weren't alone. The City pulled resources from many departments to speed up the snow removal process for customers, including crews from Parks and Recreation, Water and Light, Parking Utilities, and Sewer Utilities, as well as contracted hauling services to remove snow from the central business district. Crews will continue to work non-stop overnight to move into residential areas, while maintaining passable conditions on 1st and 2nd priority routes.

Crews anticipate being able to significantly refocus their efforts on to residential areas Wednesday morning as snow tapers off. The residential efforts will have a special focus on trash collection routes that have fallen behind with the winter weather, starting first with Tuesday collection routes, and then moving on to Wednesday, and so on. With the cross-departmental efforts, crews will also be able to make some early progress in northeast Columbia, using some available backhoes already in that area from Water and Light.

As the City carefully monitors the forecast over the next 12 hours, some possible freezing drizzle and dropping temperatures might warrant some additional salt applications to roadways to fight refreezing and slick spots for commuters.

John Glascock, Director of Public Works says "Plows worked hard to keep up with the accumulating snowfall today, and with at least five inches accumulated by 6:30 this evening, that was no easy task. Judging by the passable conditions of the priority routes, it was clear that customers really helped road crews by moving their cars off of priority routes and staying off roadways as much as possible during the snowfall."

Customers can get more information, updates on road conditions and the City's snow management efforts at www.comosnow.com and on the Public Works Facebook and Twitter pages.
