Water main break on Ash and Stadium isolated

COLUMBIA, MO (January 5, 2014) - A private six inch water main used to feed the fire suppression system at 2200 Ash Street broke around 4 a.m. on Sunday morning. The private line was fed by a 16 inch water transmission line  so a large amount of water flooded the area. The intersection of Stadium and Ash was closed this morning and water pressure in the area was compromised. Accessing the valve to isolate the break was made difficult by the large amount of water and ice. Crews were able to close a valve further down the water main around noon today. Water pressure should have returned to normal levels in this area. 

Water crews are currently responding to water distribution main breaks on Loch, Briarwood and Phyllis. Customers have been reporting problems with frozen pipes. Those with plumbing running through unheated areas are urged to take precautions against freezing pipes on their property. 

Short-term Prevention for Avoiding Frozen Pipes

·         If you have plumbing that runs through unheated areas, open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.

·         When extreme low temperatures hit, allow faucets connected to exposed pipes to slowly drip.

·         Temporarily keep the thermostat set at the same temperature during the day and night.

·         If you will be away during very cold weather, leave the thermostat set at no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Thawing Frozen Pipes

·         Keep the faucet open during the thawing process.

·         Thaw section of frozen pipe by adding heat. First, remove any flammable items from the area. Use a space heater, blow dryer or an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe to gradually heat the pipe. Do not use any device with a flame like a blowtorch.

·         Contact a plumber if the pipe is not accessible or you are unable to thaw the pipe.
