Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested
COLUMBIA, MO (July 21, 2014) - ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED
On 7/21/14 at 5:21 A.M., officers were responding to an armed
robbery at 2116 Paris Road, Fast Lane 66 when officers observed
a gray Chevrolet, matching the description of the Super 8 Motel’s
robbery only a few blocks away from this robbery. Officers
attempted a traffic stop with that vehicle and the driver refused
to stop. The driver, identified as Deshawn Smith, age 36, from
Columbia crashed his vehicle through a fence on Mulberry Drive
and then ran from the vehicle and officers.
After a short foot pursuit, Deshawn Smith was taken into custody.
Officers located a pink bandana and aviator style sunglasses
outside the driver’s door of the wrecked vehicle. Upon searching
Smith, officers located money in the same denominations as the
money that was stolen from the Fast Lane 66 Armed Robbery.
Officers also located a bag of marijuana and a handgun in a bush
where Smith was taken into custody that matched the description
of the handgun used in the robberies.
Smith was arrested for all three armed robberies to include the
armed robbery that occurred on July 19, 2014 at 7:27 P.M. at the
Super 8 Motel on Clark Lane, the armed robbery that occurred
on July 21, 2014 at 4:42 A.M. at the Motel 6 (3402 I-70 Drive
Southwest) and the armed robbery that occurred on July 21, 2014
at 5:12 A.M. at Fast Lane 66 (2116 Paris Road).
In the Armed Robbery at Motel 6, an unknown race male entered
the motel, displayed a handgun and demanded money. The clerk
refused to hand over money and the suspect fled the scene on
foot. The suspect was described as being 6’0”, slender build, last
seen wearing dark hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses with a pink
bandana covering his face.
In the Armed Robbery at Fast Lane 66, a black male matching
the same clothing description as the armed robber from Motel 6
entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded money.
The suspect fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of
money. There was no one injured in the three armed robberies.
Smith was arrested on the following: 3 counts of Robbery
in the first degree with a to be set bond; 3 counts of Armed
Criminal Action with to be set bond; leaving the scene of a motor
vehicle accident with a bond of $500.00; property damage in
the second degree with a bond of $500.00; operating a motor
vehicle on highway while license revoked with a bond of $500.00;
emergency vehicle defined with a bond of $500.00; possession
of controlled substance misdemeanor with a bond of $500.00;
operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner
with a bond of $500.00; resisting or interfering with an arrest
felony with a bond of $4,500.00, and unlawful for certain persons
to possess concealed weapon with a bond of $4,500.00.
