Youth In Action summer volunteer program begins 13th year

COLUMBIA, MO (June 2, 2014) - With the school year coming to an end, youth are deciding how to spend their free time. Youth in Action is an exciting way for youth ages 12-15 to contribute to their community this summer, make new friends and learn new skills. The program includes a variety of supervised and structured volunteer activities with organizations throughout Columbia.

The City of Columbia’s Volunteer Programs will host an informational session about Youth In Action and the 2014 summer program from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 9, at the ARC, 1701 W. Ash. This session is open house style; interested youth and their parents or guardians may attend and sign up for volunteer activities.

Participants choose the opportunities in which they would like to volunteer. Scheduled projects include helping with the Splat! Mud Obstacle Course, Fire in the Sky, Stream Team and the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri.

For more information regarding the program, contact Anastasia Harris, 2014 Youth In Action intern, at 808-2112 or agharris at gocolumbiamo.com. More information on the program, including an application and a list of summer activities, can be found on the City’s website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.

In addition to Youth In Action, the “2014 Directory of Summer Youth Volunteer Opportunities” includes many other ways for young people to volunteer their time. The directory features many organizations that welcome youth volunteers and can be found on the City’s website.
