Unattended Suitcase Closes Wal Mart Parking Lot for Two Hours

COLUMBIA, MO (March 19, 2014) - Shortly after noon today, units from the Columbia Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of an unattended suitcase left in the Wal Mart parking lot at 415 Conley Road. A 9-1-1 caller felt the bag was suspicious and reported it. Columbia Police arrived on the scene first and requested the Fire Department assist with the investigation.

Police and Fire units arrived to find a full-size black suitcase abandoned in a mulch planter near the center of the Wal Mart parking lot. Crews blocked off a portion of the parking lot while they investigated the bag.

Using a portable x-ray device, officers examined the suitcase and determined the bag to be empty. Having confirmed there were no hazards, the closed portion of the parking lot was reopened. Units were on the scene for approximately two hours. The owner of the discarded suitcase is not known at this time.
