Brush Fire Burns Fifty Acres in Northeast Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (March 20, 2014) - At 11:35 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of a small grass fire at 4805 North Hinkson Creek Road in northeast Columbia. Columbia Fire crews arrived on the scene at approximately 11:45 to find the fire had grown to approximately five acres, was wind-driven and spreading fast. The on-scene incident commander requested additional resources including brush fire apparatus from the Boone County Fire Protection District.

Firefighting hand-crews used rakes, water back-packs, and blowers as well as truck mounted equipment to contain and extinguish the fire. It took approximately two hours to contain the fire which burned almost fifty acres of grass and timber.

No structures were damaged and there were no injuries. The brush fire started after a controlled burn within a fire ring jumped the containment area.  

“The combination of dry vegetation, high winds, and low humidity make for high fire danger this time of year” said Fire Battalion Chief John Metz. “Residents inside the City should be aware that outdoor burning is prohibited without a permit and residents outside the City limits should contact their local fire department and use extreme caution when considering burning” Metz added.  

Seven fire trucks and twenty firefighters from Columbia Fire and Boone County Fire responded to the blaze. Units were on the scene for approximately two and a half hours.
