Deck Damaged by Grill Fire

COLUMBIA, MO (March 20, 2014) - At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 3500 Wakefield Drive in south Columbia.  A neighbor saw smoke and flames coming from the house next door and called 9-1-1.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene four minutes later to find the deck at the rear of the single-story home on fire. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire with a single hose line. Crews checked and confirmed that no fire had extended into the home. Firefighters used portable fans to remove smoke from inside the residence.

Assistant Fire Marshal Brian Davison investigated the fire and determined it was the result of an ember from an outdoor grill that ignited straw beneath the deck. The fire then spread to the deck, damaging it and the siding on the rear of the home. Damage is estimated at $5000. There were no injuries and no pets were harmed.

Residents are reminded when grilling outside, never leave the grill unattended and keep it well away from the house, deck railings, and eaves.

Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident. Crews were on the scene for just over an hour.
