Car Crashes into Apartment Building

COLUMBIA, MO (March 20, 2014) - At 8:23 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to investigate a report of a car striking a building at 3908 Buttonwood Drive in south Columbia. Columbia Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a white four-door sedan into the balcony structure of a first floor apartment in building #2 of the Gateway Apartments. Building #2 is an eighteen-unit, three story apartment building.

Firefighters confirmed there were no injuries and, as a precaution, evacuated the center three apartments of building #2. Crews then went to work shoring up the damaged portion of the building. A representative from Columbia Public Works Building and Site Development responded to the scene to assess the structural integrity of the building.

Once the shoring was completed and Building and Site Development confirmed the building was safe, the tenants were allowed to return to their apartments. The occupants of the three apartments were displaced for approximately one hour.

The accident occurred when a tenant was pulling into a parking space and accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. At this time, a damage estimate is not available.

Two fire engines and the Columbia Fire Department’s Technical Rescue personnel were on the scene for approximately an hour and a half.
