Missouri Immigrant Photo Exhibit at Columbia Public Library

COLUMBIA, MO (March 28, 2014) - The City of Columbia’s Human Rights Commission is one of the sponsors for a photo exhibit titled “The Missouri Immigrant Experience: Faces and Places” that is coming to Columbia. The exhibit will be on display for three weeks, Saturday, April 5, through Saturday, April 26, at the Columbia Public Library.

Missouri Immigrant & Refugee Advocates (MIRA) is hosting this event as part of its annual art exhibition. It has already been displayed in St. Louis and Kansas City. In this exhibit, the curator juxtaposes historical photos of Missouri immigrants and communities with modern day photos of the same. The work includes historic images of immigrant communities in Columbia. It features the work of four Missouri photographers: Oscar Pedroza, Juan Montana, Amela Sinanagic and Rita Chu. Danny Gonzales of the Missouri Historic Society will accompany the contemporary work and offer perspective, creating a dialogue through time about the immigrant experience and the changing face of Missouri.

The aim of this project is to increase mutual respect and understanding, challenge common myths and stereotypes and provide a cross cultural art experience for the community. The city’s Human Rights Commission is a sponsor of the project as part of the city’s human rights enhancement activities program.

The exhibit opening and gallery walk will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5. Other events include a documentary screening of “Welcome to Shelbyville” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at the library, followed by a panel discussion, and a closing reception Saturday, April 26.
