Two Alarm Fire Damages Funeral Home

COLUMBIA, MO (November 16, 2014) - At 4:54 a.m. on Sunday, November 16th the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported commercial building fire at 1610 North Garth Avenue, the Bach-Yeager Funeral Chapel. The building is located just north of I-70 and several motorists called 9-1-1 to report smoke coming from the eaves of the building.
Firefighters arrived on the scene at 5:00 a.m. to find thick, brown smoke pouring from the eaves of the two-story building. The first arriving crews entered the building and searched through zero-visibility and high heat conditions trying to locate the fire. Fire conditions and the size of the building made locating and extinguishing the fire difficult and, at 5:28 a.m., the incident commander struck a second alarm. The second alarm brought additional personnel and equipment including an air resupply unit. At approximately 6:00 a.m. the incident was considered under control. Firefighters remained on the scene for more than three hours overhauling the damage and ventilating the building.
Fire investigators remained on the scene this morning trying to determine the fire's origin and cause. No damage estimate is available at this time. There were no injuries.
Six fire engines, a ladder truck, a rescue squad, an air resupply unit and several support units responded to the blaze.
