Winter Weather Awareness Day November 19

COLUMBIA, MO (November 17, 2014) - Boone County Public Safety Joint Communications will join officials on the federal, state and local level in the annual observation of “Winter Weather Awareness Day” on Wednesday, November 19th.

“We’ll be using the day as we hope everyone does,” said PSJC Operations Manager Brian Maydwell.  “We encourage families, individuals, businesses and local governmental entities to review preparation for what winter can bring.”

Preparation for winter weather can take several forms, according to Maydwell, including having adequate food and supplies in your home and vehicle, as well as knowing the road conditions before taking a trip. “Most importantly, we urge everyone to remember 9-1-1 in the event of threats to lives and property, such as traffic accidents and house fires.”

Maydwell also pointed out that during winter weather, 9-1-1 telecommunicators receive a number of calls concerning vehicles that have slid off the road. He said that if there is yellow tape visible on the highest point on the car, such as the antenna or mirror, the car has been checked by law enforcement, MoDOT, or another agency, which means there is no need to report that car.

Winter Weather Awareness Day is designed to urge people to review the hazards and safety rules of winter weather so they are prepared for the upcoming winter season.
