Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services Honors World AIDS Day 2014 through Testing Efforts

COLUMBIA, MO (November 24, 2014) - (COLUMBIA, MO) – The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services invite the public to a free HIV testing event, Monday, December 1, 2014, 9 am to 4pm. Testing will be conducted at our clinic at 1005 W. Worley in Columbia. The first 25 people present for testing will receive a $25 Visa gift card.

World AIDS Day is December 1 and was established by the World Health Organization in 1988. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support those living with HIV, and to honor those who have died as a result of HIV. According to the World Health Organization, at the end of 2012, approximately 35.3 million people were living with HIV worldwide. In addition, an estimated 2.1 million people were newly infected with the virus in 2013, and every day more than 5,700 people contract HIV – nearly 240 every hour worldwide.

But there is hope. There are several ways to prevent HIV transmissions including safe sex practices and regular testing. Take a step toward health today, get tested and know your status. For more information, visit www.GoColumbiaMO.com/Health.
