Fire Damages residence in north Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (November 27, 2014) - At 2:13 p.m. Thursday, November 27, 2014, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 1711 Blue Ridge Road. Several 9-1-1 callers reported smoke coming from the residence.

Columbia Firefighters arrived at 2:17 p.m. to find smoke visible from the front of the residence and flames coming from a rear upstairs window. Firefighters entered the structure and using a single hose-line, crews extinguished the fire in less than ten minutes.

The fire was contained to an upstairs bedroom. The structure had heavy smoke damage to the upstairs and minor smoke and water damage to the main level. Crews had to ventilate the smoke and carbon monoxide in the residence before Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach could conduct the fire cause investigation.

Two occupants were home at the time of the fire and they were uninjured. There were smoke detectors present but they did not have batteries. The estimated damage to the structure is $50,000. The cause of the fire is improperly discarded smoking material.

Three engines, a ladder, and a rescue squad responded to the incident. Blue Ridge Road was shut down in both directions for approximately 50 minutes.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
