INCIDENT DETAILS:

The crash occurred as vehicle #1, a yellow/black Estes Kenworth tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on I-70 near the 123.6 mile marker pulling double trailers when his outside mirror was struck by an unidentified tractor-trailer also traveling westbound. As Vehicle 1 swerved to avoid further contact with the suspect vehicle, the rear trailer began to jack-knife across the roadway towards the median, and eventually became dislodged from trailer 1 and overturned, coming to final rest in the outside lane on its side. The separated trailer was struck by Vehicle 2, a white Pegasus tractor-trailer causing complete damage to the trailer and its contents. A third tractor-trailer collided with the rear of Vehicle 2 within the roadway after the impact, and a fourth tractor-trailer crashed into the grass embankment on the north side of I-70 while attempting to avoid a collision. The driver of Vehicle 4 was extricated from the truck by t

he Columbia Fire Department and transported by EMS for moderate disabling injuries. I-70 westbound lanes were shut down for approximately 2.5 hours while the accident was investigated and the roadway debris was removed by MoDOT.
