City of Columbia will host ‘Sustainapalooza’ talks on green building Oct. 17

COLUMBIA, MO (October 6, 2014) - The City of Columbia will host “Sustainapalooza,” an afternoon of green-building workshops that are free and open to the public, on Oct. 17.  This is the second year in a row for Sustainapalooza.  It will be followed by the Sustainable Living Fair Oct. 18. Both events will take place at City Hall, unless noted otherwise.

Sustainapalooza will include presentations on:

*Finding new life for used building materials: the work of Planet Reuse, a KC-based company that was a Wall Street Journal “Startup of the Year” finalist in 2013

*Columbia Stormwater Ordinance: City of Columbia Engineer and Environment & Energy Commissioner will show how construction sites can be the cause, or solution, to preventing erosion, stream sedimentation and pollutant spread

*Agriburbia! Urban design strategies for incorporating Agrarianism into our cities’ development patterns, presented by Quint Redmond of Golden, Colo.

*Columbia’s Most Efficient Offices: Join the architects and engineers of two Columbia buildings along Woodard Drive that demonstrate exemplary energy and water conservation. One building is ranked Energy Star 90+ and the other uses rainwater for flushing toilets!

*Agriburbia Design Charette: Quint Redmond to lead a dynamic brainstorming session to sketch out ideas for how Agriburbia principles could be applied to locations in Columbia.

The event is a collaborative effort between local chapters of the US Green Building Council, American Institute of Architects, Peaceworks Center for Sustainable Living, Construction Specifications Institute, Simon Oswald Architecture, PWArchitects and Peckham Architecture. Lunch will be available for $10 for those who pre-register by emailing sustainapaloozaCOMO at gmail.com.
