City Departments Offer Free Reflective Vest Distribution

COLUMBIA, MO (October 23, 2014) - GetAbout Columbia and the City of Columbia Disabilities Commission have teamed up to provide free reflective vests for community distribution on a first come, first served basis.

The Disabilities Commission purchased the vests and GetAbout Columbia, housed within the Parks and Recreation Department, will distribute the vests to persons in need.  The Parks and Recreation Office, located at One S. 7th St., will serve as the main distribution venue.  GetAbout Columbia staff also plan to periodically distribute the vests on City roadways with a high volume of pedestrian traffic combined with the absence of sidewalks.  Vests can be reserved by calling Janet Godon, GetAbout Columbia Outreach Coordinator, at (573) 441-5495.

Motorists are reminded to pass pedestrians and cyclists at a careful and prudent reduced speed allowing for a safe passing distance.  When safe to do so, it is legal to cross the center double yellow line if necessary to provide the required safe passing distance.  Motorists must also yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks.

Pedestrian safety tips include the following:  wear light-colored, reflective clothing, walk against (facing) traffic and make eye contact with motorists prior to crossing a street.  Being visible, especially at night or during inclement weather, is an integral part of ensuring personal safety.

About GetAbout Columbia (getaboutcolumbia.com):  Funding for GetAbout Columbia is provided by the Federal Highway Administration’s Non-Motorized Transportation Program.  Education and encouragement programs are administered by the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department.  Additional information about GetAbout Columbia can be found at www.gocolumbiamo.com.
