Two Injured in Fall at Stephens Lake Park

COLUMBIA, MO (October 23, 2014) - At 4:26 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of a fall victim at Stephens Lake Park, 2001 East Broadway.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 4:32 p.m. and were led by park visitors to the site of Sherman’s Dam on the Park’s south side. Firefighters found two 19-year-old males on the rocks below Sherman’s Dam, near the water’s edge of Hinkson Creek. It appeared the individuals may have fallen approximately eighteen feet.

Because of the seriousness of the injuries and the difficult access up the bank of Hinkson Creek, firefighters requested an additional ambulance and fire personnel. Firefighters provided medical care, placed the victims in rescue stretchers, known as “Stokes Baskets,” and hand carried them up the rocky embankment to waiting ambulances.

Both patients were transported to University Hospital with potentially serious injuries. It is not known how or why the individuals fell.

Two ambulances, a fire engine, ladder truck, and rescue squad responded to the incident. Crews were on the scene for approximately ninety minutes.
