City of Columbia Announces Adopt-a-Rain Garden Program

COLUMBIA, MO (September 2, 2014) - The City's Volunteer Program and the Public Works Stormwater Education Program are partnering on a new volunteer program to allow residents to adopt a rain garden.

Volunteers, including individuals, families, groups or businesses, will be asked to help maintain a rain garden by removing invasive plants, picking up litter, installing new plants, and mulching edges. Commitments are two years and volunteers should plan to share a minimum of 8-10 hours per year on at least three days.

Volunteers will be recognized with a sign at their rain garden. Public Works Department staff members will be available to provide orientation and training regarding the maintenance of the rain garden.

The initial rain gardens available for adoption are along the South Providence Pedway between Green Meadows and Southampton. Other rain garden locations will be available throughout Columbia in the future.

To learn more about adopting your own rain garden, please contact Andrea Shelton at 573.874.6271. or amshelto at gocolumbiamo.com.
