Deck fire damages apartment building

COLUMBIA, MO (April 12, 2015) - At 5:57 a.m. Sunday, April 12, 2015 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported building fire at 1311 Ashland Road, the Ashland Manor Apartments. The 9-1-1 caller stated there was a fire on the apartment’s second floor deck.

Columbia Firefighters arrived at 6:03 a.m. to find flames coming from the second floor deck of a three-story multi-unit apartment building. Firefighters used a single hose line to extinguish the fire on the deck. Fire crews determined that the fire had burned through the outside wall of the building and was burning inside the wall space. Personnel used a chainsaw to remove approximately twelve square feet of wood siding and extinguished the remaining fire.  All fire damage was contained to the outside of the building. There was water damage to the first floor apartment below the fire.

Columbia Assistant Fire Marshal Brian Davison determined the fire started from an improperly discarded cigarette.  A preliminary damage estimate is $20,000. There were no injuries. Smoke alarms were present but, because the fire was on the outside of the building, did not alarm prior to the 9-1-1 call.

Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident. Crews were on the scene for approximately 90 minutes.
