Boards and commissions applications are available

COLUMBIA, MO (August 20, 2015) - COLUMBIA, MO (August 20, 2015) - 

The Columbia city clerk is accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received by the City Clerk's Office, 701 E. Broadway, second floor, by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4. Applications are available at the clerk's office or on the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings: 

BICYCLE/PEDESTRIAN COMMISSION:  1 vacancy with term to expire July 31, 2018.  Must have knowledge of street construction and maintenance, and must be a qualified voter of the City.  The Commission advises the Council on issues relating to sidewalks, walkways and trails.  Monthly meetings held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

BOARD OF ELECTRICAL EXAMINERS: 1 vacancy with term to expire August 1, 2018.  Must be a layperson. The Board is empowered to give examinations for electricians' licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings, when necessary, are held on the third Thursday of the month at 5:00 p.m.

BOARD OF MECHANICAL EXAMINERS:  1 vacancy with term to expire June 17, 2016. Must be a layperson and a resident of the City of Columbia.  The Board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates.  Monthly meetings held on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m.

BOARD OF PLUMBING EXAMINERS:  1 vacancy with term to expire May 31, 2016.  Must be a master plumber or journeyman plumber with six years experience in the plumbing business, and a resident of the City of Columbia.  The Board establishes standards and procedures for the qualification, examination, and licensing of master, journeyman, residential and apprentice plumbers, and issues certificates of competency as appropriate.  Monthly meetings are generally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:00 p.m.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CODES COMMISSION:  4 vacancies with terms to expire August 1, 2016, August 1, 2017, and August 1, 2018. One alternate member is needed from each of the following categories: person experienced in fire prevention, professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber, and minor contractor or home builder. The Commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes.  Monthly meetings held on the fourth Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m.

CITY OF COLUMBIA NEW CENTURY FUND, INC. BOARD: 3 vacancies with terms to expire September 30, 2018.  Must have an interest in the future of the City of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future success, and must be current residents and qualified electors of the City of Columbia.  The New Century Fund, Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit corporation.  Meetings held on call.

COLUMBIA VISION COMMISSION:  4 vacancies with terms to expire December 15, 2015 and December 15, 2016 for coordinating committee members.  Two must be residents of Boone County, not residing within the city limits of Columbia, and the others can be qualified voters residing within the City of Columbia or residents of Boone County, not residing within the city limits of Columbia.  Members must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process.  Candidates will be evaluated on the ability to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships or positions, and contributions to the diversity of the Commission.  The Commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the visioning process.  Meetings held on the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

COMMISSION ON CULTURAL AFFAIRS:  1 vacancy with term to expire October 31, 2015.  Must have significant knowledge and demonstrated interest in one or more areas of the arts, including music, dance, literature, visual arts, theater, folk arts, media arts, design and arts education. Must also be a qualified voter of the City, and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the Commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the Commission.  The Commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the City.  Monthly meetings held on the second Monday of the month at 4:15 p.m.

CONVENTION AND VISITORS ADVISORY BOARD:  6 vacancies with terms to expire September 30, 2016 and September 30, 2017.  One must be an owner or operator of a hotel or motel within the City limits.  All shall have demonstrated by past activities an interest in the convention and tourism business.  The Board shall advise the City on the use of the funds created by the hotel and motel tax.  Monthly meetings held on the last Monday of the month at 12:00 p.m.

MAYOR'S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS AND HEALTH:  3 vacancies with terms to expire November 30, 2015 and November 30, 2016.  The Council educates the public about the importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the community.  Monthly meetings held the first Tuesday of every even month at 12:30 p.m.

PERSONNEL ADVISORY BOARD:2 vacancies with terms to expire September 30, 2018. Both must be residents and registered qualified voters of the City, and shall have significant, substantive knowledge of social, legislative, political, and administrative factors affecting personnel management and employee relations.  In addition, members must not hold a lucrative position in City government nor any other lucrative public office during their terms. The Board advises the Council on its findings, opinions, various conclusions and recommendations on the status of the personnel system.  Meetings held on call.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE ADVISORY COMMISSION:  1 vacancy with term to expire October 31, 2017.  Must be a student under the age of twenty-five.  The Commission promotes coordination of programs intended to prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse.  Monthly meetings held on the second Wednesday of the month at 12:00 p.m.

TAX INCREMENT FINANCING COMMISSION:  1 vacancy with term to expire September 1, 2019.  The Commission serves as an advisory body to the City Council as it relates to the consideration of tax increment financing proposals submitted by interested parties or initiated by any public agency in accordance with the Real Property Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act.  Meetings held on call.  (Mayor's Appointment with the Consent of the City Council)

UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION COUNCIL OF BOONE COUNTY:  1 vacancy with term to expire March 1, 2017.  Must be a resident of the City.  The Council makes recommendations to the University in regard to the extension program and administers Boone County's share of the cost of the extension services in the area.  Monthly meetings held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
