Attic Fire Damages Central Columbia Duplex

COLUMBIA, MO (February 25, 2015) - At 6:53 a.m.  Wednesday, February 25, 2015 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 306 Hartley Court in Central Columbia. The occupant of Apartment 2 called 9-1-1 to report a fire in the attic of her apartment.

Columbia Firefighters arrived at 6:58 a.m. to find smoke coming from all the roof vents on the building. Firefighters entered the apartment and encountered fire in the ceiling and attic of the family room.  Using a single hose line crews had the fire knocked down in less than ten minutes.

The only occupants of the building, an adult male in Apartment 1 and the adult female, and her dog, in Apartment 2 escaped without injury.  Smoke alarms were present in the building. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.  The family room and attic area sustained significant damage.  A dollar loss estimate has not been determined.

Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident. Crews remained on the scene for approximately two hours overhauling the damage and attempting to salvage belongings for the occupant.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
