Columbia Fire Department Review of NIOSH Report
COLUMBIA, MO (February 25, 2015) - The Columbia Fire Department received the fire fighter fatality investigation from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for Lieutenant Bruce Britt on February 3, 2015.
Fire Chief Randy White stated 'Together with the command staff, we have reviewed the report and its recommendations. We will consider those recommendations as we move forward and incorporate anything we can if possible.'
As an example, although scheduled prior to the release of the NIOSH report and it's recommendations, as of February 24, 2015 all uniformed fire department personnel received the National Fire Academy field course Incident Safety Officer (ISO) training, administered by the Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute. The tragic loss of Lieutenant Britt put an added emphasis on this training and reinforced the message of the need for situational awareness while responding to all emergency calls.
White stated 'As a department, we have a practice of reviewing each of our standard operating procedures on an eighteen month cycle and will continue with added focus since the loss of Lieutenant Britt. As we have in the past, we will continue to evaluate what we do and how it is done in order to give the best service to our customers and provide the safest work environment possible for our fire fighters.'
