COLUMBIA, MO (July 1, 2015) -                                                         FIREWORKS

 

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Between June 22, 2012 and July 22, 2012, more than 5,000 consumers were treated in hospital emergency rooms due to fireworks-related injuries. 60% of all fireworks injuries occur during the 30 days surrounding the July 4 holiday. More than half of these reported injuries involved burns to the hands, head and face. About 1,000 reported injuries involving sparklers and bottle rockets, fireworks that are frequently and incorrectly considered safe for young children.  The July 4th Holiday should be remembered as a fun and enjoyable time when we reflect on the liberties we have, remember those who have and are serving our country, and to enjoy time with family and friends over barbequed hamburgers and hotdogs.

A tragic incident with fireworks can literally scar those memories.

So, this 4th of July, The Columbia Police Department and The Columbia Fire Department want  to remind citizens that discharging and/or possessing fireworks within the city limits is prohibited by ordinance. Leave fireworks to the professionals and attend the FREE professional display at Sixth and Cherry parking garage at around 9:15 P.M. As a reminder, DO NOT bring fireworks to this display.  The Columbia Police Department will have extra patrol officers on duty for fireworks enforcement from Monday, June 30, 2015 until Sunday, July 5, 2015. If you have a fireworks complaint, please do not call 9-1-1 but instead contact the Joint Communications non-emergency phone number at (573) 442-6131.
