Mayor appoints Pedestrian Safety Task Force members
COLUMBIA, MO (June 3, 2015) - At Monday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Bob McDavid appointed 15 people to a new task force aimed at reducing collisions between vehicles and pedestrians.
Co-Chaired by Ward 1 City Council Member Clyde Ruffin and Ward 4 City Council Member Ian Thomas, the panel includes: James Beattie, Marin Blevins, Nate Brown, Tec Chapman, Syed Ejaz, Katie Essing, Steven Hanson, Leeann Johnson, Kyle Riley, Rachel Ruhlen, Frank Schmidt, Lawrence Simonson, Michael Szewczyk, John White and Dawn Zeterburg (see affiliations after end of story).
Establishing the task force coincides with the co-chairs’ concerns about Columbia’s unusual number of fatalities and injuries involving vehicles and pedestrians over the last year and with Mayor McDavid’s participation in the national “Mayor’s Challenge for Safer People, Safer Streets.”
Task force members are charged with analyzing the problem, educating the community, looking at law enforcement strategies and considering engineering solutions. They have until May 16, 2016, to report their findings and recommendations to the City Council.
