City Manager reports on Strategic Performance and Priorities in State of the City Message

COLUMBIA, MO (June 16, 2015) - (COLUMBIA, MO) – “I believe that we reached all of the most important strategic goals,” City Manager Mike Matthes said in his 2015 State of the City message.  “Although we see progress,” he added, “we also see troubling signs that not everyone in Columbia has an opportunity to thrive.”

Required by Columbia’s City Charter, the report is issued annually to set the stage for City Council consideration of the City Manager’s proposed budget.

Matthes noted success with improving City street conditions.  “We listened to the public and dedicated a new source of revenue – PILOT payments from the Columbia Energy Center -- toward resurfacing streets. That effort has resulted in a 20% increase in satisfaction. This level of improvement is rare and something I am proud to report,” Matthes said.

The City also set the bar for citizen satisfaction with customer service at 20 points higher than regional or national benchmarks, and it improved performance in five of seven strategic priorities: customer focused government; economic development; financial health; infrastructure; and City workforce.

Matthes said that the community's satisfaction with Columbia’s quality of life was stable at 79%.  “We did lose some ground, however, with the community's satisfaction with growth management.”

In his 2013 message, Matthes said, “As we begin to prepare for the future, we can be fairly certain that our community will be larger and very possibly poorer,” based on population and income trends at the time.

Because recent data create even more concern with income, employment, health and housing disparities, Matthes said that reducing some of this imbalance is one of his highest priorities over the next three years.

The full text of the message is at http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/city-manager/annual-programs-priorities/ .  It will become the introduction to the City’s Citizen Handbook and distributed to every residential address in Columbia over the next month.
