America Recycles Day - Sunday, November 15. Help Columbia Reach Recycling Goals

COLUMBIA, MO (November 12, 2015) - Sunday, November 15 is America Recycles Day. The city of Columbia encourages our residents to celebrate recycling and help us reach our 34% waste recovery goal.

It's actually astonding the amount of materials which end up in landfills which should end up in the recycling stream.

*While 75% of our waste could be recycled, Americans only recycle about 30% of that waste.

*Recycling a single glass bottle or jar saves enough energy to power a 60 watt light bulb for 4 hours.

*On average, each American generates 4.4 pounds of trash - each day! That's 1,600 pounds per person each year.

We've made it easier to recycle more products this year. Plastics labeled 1 through 7 can now be recycled in your blue bag or via the drop off bins located throughout Columbia.

During the week, simply place recycling materials such as rigid plastics 1-7, aluminum cans, tin cans, and glass jars and bottles into your blue recycling bag. Fiber materials like newspapers, magazines, office paper, and cardboard can be placed in a cardboard box or paper sack. Then simply set both out on your regular trash day at the curb. It's that easy.

Don't have curbside collection but would like to recycle? That's easy too. Simply drop those materials off at a number of recycling drop-off sites throughout Columbia. You can find those sites on our website, GoColumbiaMo.com

Want to get more involved? We have many opportunites for you, your family, and your friends. Your promoting great causes and you'll likely make some new friends.

*Become a Recycling Ambassador and help educate other volunteers on waste reduction and recycling.

*Become a Household Hazardous Waste aide. We could you your help on 1st and 3rd Saturdays from April to November.

*Learn about composting and become a Master Composter to help promote composting throughout Columbia.

You can sign up for one or more of these opportunities via the city of Columbia website at GoColumbiaMo.com

Complex problems take collective community wide solutions. Become involved and Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
