Councilman Skala attends National League of Cities University Leadership Summit on leadership through challenging times

COLUMBIA, MO (October 20, 2015) - Columbia Ward 3 Councilman Karl Skala joined more than 70 elected officials for the National League of Cities (NLC) University 23rd Annual Leadership Summit to learn how to lead through challenging times in their communities. The summit was a retreat-style training program designed to strengthen and enhance the leadership skills of city officials and was held in conjunction with NLC’s Race, Equity, And Leadership (REAL) third REAL Talk Forum held in Sanford, Fla. The summit was held in Orlando Sept. 16-19.

“There is a striking correspondence between national discussions of racial equity and Columbia's Strategic Plan goal of social equity. I intend to apply what I learn through my participation in the NLC's REAL initiative to Columbia's quest for racial and social equity solutions," Skala said.

“This year’s NLC University Leadership Summit was an excellent opportunity for city officials to learn about how race and equity issues can help strengthen communities by making them more inclusive,” said Clarence E. Anthony, CEO and executive director of the National League of Cities. “Through presentations, networking and mobile workshops, city officials learned best practices in areas from public safety to economic development to help make their cities and towns better back home.”

The summit featured presentations about how race and equity are connected to trustworthy leadership from Leon Andrews Jr., director of the REAL initiative, Julie Nelson, director of the Government Alliance on Race and Equity and Glenn Harris, director for the Center of Social Inclusion. The speakers described how organizations such as NLC can enhance the capacity of local officials to address the historical, systemic and structural barriers caused by racism and inequities.

The summit also featured two mobile workshops; one workshop focused on public safety in Orlando, which included a tour of the city’s state-of-the-art operations center, and the other demonstrated Orlando’s commitment to advancing opportunity for boys and men of color.
