Citizen handbook mailed to residents for first time

COLUMBIA, MO (September 25, 2015) - In the past, the City of Columbia’s citizen handbook was printed and placed in many locations around the city for residents to pick up. This year, for the first time, the handbook will reach every residential mailbox in Columbia.

For several years the city has published its handbook to provide residents with information about city resources. In 2013, the city added a performance report to show residents the city’s progress against the strategic plan and what they bought for their taxes.

The intent of changing the distribution method is so more residents will get a chance to see the handbook. The City printed 69,512 copies of the handbook and the cost to print and mail the handbooks is approximately $1 per copy.

City Manager Mike Matthes said informing the community is worth the cost.

“We’re spending a tiny fraction of the budget to communicate where our money comes from and how we spend it,” Matthes said. “We feel like giving back $1.00 a year to each resident is a good investment.”

This year’s handbook focuses on the wealth of art that graces Columbia, such as the downtown traffic boxes that have been transformed by local artists. Readers will get to enjoy photos of the works of art while they read the handbook.

“We love living in Columbia,” Matthes said. “We feel it is great to showcase local artists and hope residents find this useful.”

Residents should expect the handbooks in their mailboxes by the end of September or early October.  The handbook can be viewed online at gocolumbiamo.com, and copies will be available in the City Hall lobby, at the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau and other places around town.
