Public Works crews treating roadways and monitoring conditions for refreeze
COLUMBIA, MO (January 9, 2016) - A full street operations crew has been monitoring and treating roadways since 7:00 a.m. this morning and reacting to weather conditions. Snow flurries are now expected to only last until about 2:00 p.m., with the heaviest band already passed this morning.
Despite cold air, warm surface temperatures this morning have limited pavement accumulation and freezing. Roadways across town are generally wet with melted snow, but accumulation is noticeably higher on the east side of Columbia where roads are becoming slushy. Streets on the west side of town are accumulating less snow and maintaining pretty dry conditions. Road crews continue to treat trouble areas such as bridges, curves, and hills with salt to prevent freezing, and plows are being used in some areas on the east side of town where snow is accumulating faster.
Temperatures are expected to drop at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon and again at 6:00 p.m. down to about 21 degrees, which will increase the risk of wet pavement freezing this evening and overnight. Crews will continue to monitor conditions and apply salt to wet pavement to combat refreeze as much as possible.
If snow accumulations reach at least 2 inches, parking enforcement along priority snow routes will go into effect and customers will need to move their vehicles off the street. Customers can sign up for automatic alerts with Nixle at www.ComoSnow.com to be notified when accumulations reach 2 inches.
Slickness on roadways and walkways is possible and motorist and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution when traveling.
Customers can monitor snow operations at www.comosnow.com for updates, road conditions, and city treatment efforts.
