Fatality Incident Involving Columbia Transit Bus

COLUMBIA, MO (March 7, 2016) - At 8:07 a.m. on Monday, March 7, a Columbia Transit bus struck a pedestrian at the intersection of Stadium Boulevard and Monk Drive. The pedestrian was fatally injured.

"On behalf of the City of Columbia, we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family of the individual," said City Manager Mike Matthes. "We are working with the agencies investigating this tragic incident."

There were no reported injuries to the passengers on the Transit Bus involved in the incident. Passengers were provided transportation to the MU Student Union by another City of Columbia Transit Bus.

The driver of the bus, as per federal requirements, was drug and alcohol screened immediately following the incident. The driver, a temporary part-time employee, has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.  Because the driver is a temporary part-time employee, the leave is without pay. The city has Employee Assistance Programs available to all city employees.

Video from the bus cameras is being turned over to Columbia Police to assist them with the investigation and reconstruction of the incident. Columbia Police will issue a release with the results of their investigation once it is complete.
