Introduction to electric bicycles seminar

COLUMBIA, MO (March 15, 2016) - Come see what the buzz is all about! GetAbout Columbia, in partnership with Columbia Parks and Recreation, is offering a presentation and demonstration on electric bicycles from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on March 21 at the ARC, 1701 W. Ash.

 

Electric bicycles, also known as e-bikes, are in high demand in European and Asian cities. Electric bicycles are designed with a built-in motor that activates either by pedal-assist or throttle-control.  Cyclists in the United States are starting to pay attention to this global trend with increasing affordability, product availability and the advent of new technology developments (i.e. all-in-one retrofit wheels and e-cargo bikes).

 

The event is free and open to the public.  A short presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.  Local bike shops and e-bike owners will be on hand to showcase a variety of e-bicycle models.

 

In a 2015 survey, League of American Bicyclists members agree that e-bikes have positive aspects. More than 80 percent of respondents indicated that they agreed or somewhat agreed that electric bicycles can be used by older people and people with physical challenges, functionally replace cars for a wide variety of trips, offer transportation options to people who can’t drive, expand the number of people using bicycles, get more people biking more often and make family bicycling more accessible.   According to Navigant Research, global annual sales of e-bicycles are expected to grow from nearly 32 million e-bicycles in 2014 to over 40 million in 2023.
