Fire Damages Structure in Southwest Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (May 26, 2016) - At 5:48 a.m., on Thursday, May 26, 2016, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a possible lightning strike:  tree on fire at 4300 Royal Aberdeen Street.  Multiple 911 callers reported flames from the tree.

Units arrived on scene and found a tree that had been on fire next to a house.  

During their investigation they noticed a slight gas odor and smoke odor inside the house.  The Thermal Imaging Camera showed that the bricks around the chimney flu were hot.  Crews pull the mantel and some of the chimney bricks out to check for active fire.  AmerenUE was notified about the gas odor.

At this time the damage is estimated to be $10,000. Crews were on the scene for 2 hours.

Three engines, a ladder, and a rescue squad responded to the incident.  

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor
