City’s annual Commemorative Poster unveiled

COLUMBIA, MO (September 2, 2016) - Columbia is known for its vibrant music scene, hosting hundreds of concerts and several festivals each year. For this reason, it seems fitting that the painting titled “Missouri Riverbilly Band” by Lisa Bartlett was selected for this year’s Commemorative Poster for the City of Columbia. Unveiled on Thursday, Sept. 1, the artwork was selected from images submitted by mid-Missouri artists through a jury process.

Artist Lisa Bartlett received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from Columbia College in 1988. Currently, Bartlett is the artistic director for the Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival, and she owns a fine arts and fine crafts gallery called Artlandish Gallery. Bartlett also has a working studio and is on the board for the North Village Arts District. In 2015, Bartlett previously collaborated with the Office of Cultural Affairs and its Traffic Box Art program, and her artwork is featured on the traffic signal box on the corner of Ninth and Cherry streets.

Bartlett said her artwork is directed toward manifesting communication within current cultures that includes all generations and all peoples.

“I would like to be provocative enough so that viewers will want to dig deeper into history and learn the stories for themselves,” Bartlett said. “In other words, create a bit of mystery, just enough to start new thought processes.”

The painting features a mid-Missouri band, Dave & Dyno and the Roadkill Orchestra.

“This painting represents Missouri at its finest,” Bartlett said. “I find musicians and the act of making music very interesting. There is movement and sound and an overall feeling to capture that is exciting. The band’s music is folky, simple and fun. Their lyrics make you sit up and listen. I have tried to capture some of that folky spirit in this painting.”

The 2016 Commemorative Poster was unveiled at the Missouri Theatre during the Celebration of the Arts, hosted by Dr. Richard Burns and Mrs. Tootie Burns.  Funds raised by the event go toward the Columbia Arts Fund, an arts endowment fund established through the Community Foundation of Central Missouri intended to augment annual funding to arts and culture organizations.

The “Missouri Riverbilly Band” poster can be purchased at the City’s Office of Cultural Affairs, 300 S. Providence Road. The City’s Commemorative Poster is a program of the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs with a sponsorship in 2016 from Commerce Bank.
