Columbia Hospitality Corps to celebrate first birthday on Thursday

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Hospitality Corps, a volunteer
program of the Columbia Convention & Visitors Bureau, will celebrate
it's first birthday on Thursday, Aug. 26 with a luncheon a the
Columbia Country Club. The event will thank the 44 volunteers who are
part of the Corps and is sponsored by the Convention & Visitor Bureau,
Columbia Lodging Association, Columbia Hotel Marketing Association and
the Mid-Missouri Tourism Council.
Volunteers with the Columbia Hospitality Corps staff the Lake of
the Woods Visitors Center located in east Columbia near I-70. The first
volunteer staffed the center on Aug. 23, 2003 and since, volunteers have
greeted 2,430 visitors and logged over 3,700 hours of service.
Twenty-two volunteers were part of the Corps when it was created and are
still active volunteers.
"Volunteers with the Columbia Hospitality Corps are
instrumental to the success of the Lake of the Woods Visitors Center,"
said Lorah Steiner, director of the Columbia Convention & Visitors
Bureau. "Without them, the Center simply would not be open to greet
guests to our city."
In addition to staffing the visitors center, Corps volunteers
have also assisted with special events including the premier of
"Killer Diller", MU's "For All We Call Mizzou" campaign
kickoff and the National Trappers Association Convention.
The city of Columbia welcomes additional volunteers to the
program. Volunteers must be neat in appearance, friendly and have
knowledge of the community. Those interested can call the city's
Office of Volunteer Services at 874-7499.
