Festival of the Arts Commemorative Poster Unveiled

(COLUMBIA) - Joel Sager's painting titled Farmscape I has been chosen
as the Commemorative Poster for the 2004 Columbia Festival of the Arts.

The work was chosen from 132 images submitted by 22 Missouri artists
through a juried selection process. Farmscape I is executed with an
under-painting of color and subsequent tar wash. The original is
privately owned by Drew Oestreich of Fulton.

Sager created the painting after a long drive north to Minnesota. In
his statement about the work, he describes his inspiration: "I was
particularly struck by the expansive corn fields and dilapidated
farmhouses lining the highway. It was in these farmscapes that I found
comprehensive textures, colors and compositions." Sager intends the
work as "an antiquated snapshot of the quickly fading symbols of rural
life."

Sager, a native Missourian, recently completed his degree in fine arts
at William Jewell College near Kansas City. While there, he received the
Harriman Fine Arts Scholarship and was a four-year recipient of the
Carpe Annum award, given to the most outstanding art major. After
graduation, Joel interned with artist Mark English and received a full
scholarship to the Illustration Academy in Richmond, Va. Joel currently
works as an independent artist and has lived in Columbia since 2003.

The 2004 Commemorative Poster, Farmscape I, can be purchased at Deck
the Walls in the Columbia Mall, at the city's Office of Cultural
Affairs, 13 N. 8th Street, or at the Columbia Festival of the Arts, to
be held September 25 and 26 on Courthouse Square in downtown Columbia.
