Closure on Garth Avenue

	(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Public Works Department announced the
closure of a section of Garth Avenue. Beginning Monday, May 17, Garth
Avenue, between North Garth Court and Caribou Drive, will be closed to
traffic to facilitate the removal and reconstruction of the bridge over
Bear Creek, as well as the reconstruction of Garth Avenue. The closure
is expected to last approximately five months, weather permitting.
	This work is in conjunction with the reconstruction of Garth
Avenue from West Thurman Drive to Blue Ridge Road. Emery Sapp and Sons
Inc., of Columbia, was the successful bidder on the project in the
amount of $1,601,942.86. This project will consist of the construction
of a 33-foot wide Portland Cement concrete pavement with a roundabout at
the intersection with Blue Ridge Road, storm drainage piping, bridge
reconstruction, an 8-foot wide pedway, 5-foot wide sidewalk, Bear Creek
trail relocation, landscaping, several permanent storm water quality
treatment basins and other incidental work. 
	It is anticipated that total project construction will be
completed in the fall of 2004. Detours around this project will be
marked by construction signs and should be utilized. Care should be
exercised in the construction area and alternate routes should be used.
