Afternoon incident injures cyclist on campus
COLUMBIA, MO (August 18, 2005) -- Columbia firefighters responded to a
crash at the intersection of College Avenue and Rollins Street at 3:35
p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18. Initial reports to 9-1-1 indicated that a
bicyclist had been struck and then dragged under a large truck.
Columbia firefighters and paramedics from the University Hospitals
arrived on the scene to find a college-age female pinned underneath a
Columbia Water & Light truck. A heavy rescue squad was dispatched to the
scene to assist with patient extrication. Firefighters and paramedics
were challenged at the scene by high heat and humidity while working in
a very confined area on patient care.
A nurse was on her way to work and was able to assist the patient prior
to emergency crews arriving on the scene.
The patient, after being struck and dragged under the truck was able to
talk to firefighters and paramedics during the extrication. She was
rushed to the University of Missouri Hospitals and Clinics Level 1
Trauma Center with possible life threatening injuries.
As of 7 p.m., the patient was still in surgery at University Hospitals
and no patient condition report was available.
University of Missouri Police are investigating the cause of the crash
and will issue a separate press release. Columbia Fire Department
assisted in the investigation by providing a ladder truck later in the
event to take aerial photos. Traffic was very congested at the time of
the crash as both northbound lanes of College Avenue were closed through
the rush hour.
Columbia Water & Light Director Dan Dashoe responded to the scene. The
drivers of the vehicles involved in the crash were evaluated at the
scene for shock. Neither was transported and both refused medical
attention.
