Women's Health Week: Health Department highlights services available
(COLUMBIA, MO) - In recognition of National Women's Health Week (May 8-14), the Columbia/Boone County Health Department is sponsoring a women's health fair on Thursday, May 12, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will take place at the new Health Department location, 1005 W. Worley (corner of West Blvd. and W. Worley Street).
The health fair is designed encourage all women to take advantage of important preventative healthcare services. Representatives from various agencies will be available to provide information regarding access to health care services at little or no cost.
* Timely mammography screening among women age 40 or older could reduce breast cancer mortality by approximately 16 percent compared with women who are not screened.
* Pap tests can find cervical cancer at an early stage when it is most curable or even prevent the disease if precancerous lesions found during the test are treated.
* Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death and is a major contributor to heart disease (the number one killer of women).
Free screenings available at the health fair include: blood pressure, blood glucose, BMI (body mass index), and HIV testing. Agencies sponsoring the event include: the Health Department, Family Health Center, Family Counseling Center, and The Shelter.
