Caution urged at COLT railroad crossings in the evening hours

(COLUMBIA, MO) - While the Columbia Terminal (COLT) railroad
occasionally delivers cars during the nighttime hours throughout the
year, nighttime trains will be more common during the next three weeks.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 14, the COLT will sporadically operate trains
during nighttime hours in order to facilitate a track maintenance
project on the railroad. The track work is expected to last about three
weeks.
The COLT encourages motorists be prepared to stop for a train at
all railroad crossings regardless of the time of day or day of the week.
Railroads, including COLT, do not run on a set schedule and motorists
should expect a train at a railroad crossing at any time.
Rail transportation delays due to hurricane-affected areas of
the United States have also made evening rail traffic more common. Local
companies that rely on rail shipments to produce manufactured goods have
needed products as soon as they arrive. In critical situations, COLT has
made nighttime deliveries to keep local businesses from having to
suspend business operations.
The COLT is a short line railroad owned and operated by Columbia
Water & Light and provides railroad freight service to Columbia and
mid-Missouri through an interconnection with the main rail line in
Centralia, Mo. The railroad was bought in 1987 from Norfolk Southern
when they decided to no longer serve the Columbia area. Today the
railroad handles over 2,000 cars a year.
For more information about the railroad crossing safety, see the
Missouri Operation Lifesaver Web site at www.showmeol.org.
