Sewer line behind City Hall to be repaired

COLUMBIA, MO (February 10, 2006) -- The Public Works Department has
announced that a city sewer maintenance crew will repair a sewer line
behind City Hall, which is at 701 E. Broadway. Work is scheduled to
begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, and should be complete the same day.

Work will consist of excavating the sewer line serving the City Hall
Annex, that houses Utility Customer Service and other city operations
and the Gates Building, that houses the Office of Cultural Affairs and
the Office of Volunteer Services.

The sewer line is 10-12 feet deep and has about a 3-foot long break. A
significant void has formed over the break. The soil over the pipe has a
sandy consistency and there is a possibility that the void will continue
and result in pavement failure. After the sewer line is repaired, the
pit will be backfilled and a temporary asphalt surface will be placed. A
permanent patch will be made later. The back entrance to City Hall
should be accessible after the work.
