FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 4, 2006

City contributes $150,000 toward construction of MU incubator

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia presented a $150,000 check
to the Missouri Innovation Center (MIC) at the University of
Missouri-Columbia at a press conference this morning as part of the
community's contribution toward construction of a technology incubator
on the MU campus.
The technology incubator will consist of a facility and a
program that helps start businesses from within the university. The
technology already exists at the university. The incubator will provide
a facility to turn that knowledge into successful, profitable
companies.
The city's Economic Development Department has looked at other
communities across the Midwest and how they have partnered with their
universities to stimulate the formation of high-technology jobs.
Communities like Madison, Wis.; Champaign/Urbana, Ill.; Ames, Iowa and
West Lafayette, Ind. have proven that incubators assist in the formation
of high-tech companies that create local, high-paying and high-skilled
jobs.
"I have long believed that the best approach to economic
development in Columbia is to partner with the university and take
advantage of our strengths, which include the benefit of the
university's basic research," said Mayor Darwin Hindman.
Local examples of start-up companies that have created
high-skilled jobs include ABC Laboratories and Carfax.
