Water building dedicated to long-term employee

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Joe Paul Crane is a legend in the Columbia
water department. Anyone who ever worked with him will tell you about
his impeccable work ethic, dedication and leadership. In honor of
Crane's 39 years of service to Columbia Water and Light, the city
is dedicating the water distribution center in his honor. The public is
invited to attend a ceremony to name the Joe P. Crane Water Distribution
Center on March 22 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1510 Business Loop 70
East.
The water distribution center was completed in 2004. The
building is used as a store room, repair facility and provides office
space for staff. After the building was completed, Columbia Water and
Light staff suggested the building be named after Joe Paul Crane, who
passed away September 30, 2003. He is known throughout the community as
a resilient, hard-working man who was a model employee. Crane worked
countless nights, weekends and holidays making emergency repairs to
broken water mains. He kept details about the water system in his head
and was a valuable reference for his fellow employees.
Crane started working for the city of Columbia as a pipe laborer
on July 29, 1957 and worked his way up to equipment operator, equipment
operator II, labor foreman, labor foreman III and was named water
distribution superintendent in 1985. Crane retired on December 13, 1996
after 39 years of service to the city. He is one of the longest-term
employees for the Water Division. Joe Paul's brother, Tom, was also a
long-term Water and Light employee and his family still lives in the
area.
