Afternoon fire damages Columbia home
COLUMBIA, MO (May 2, 2006) -- Columbia firefighters responded to a
report of a residential structure fire at 404 Bourn Ave. Initial reports
to the Public Safety Joint Communications Center were of flames visible
from a second floor window.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and reported smoke coming from the
roof. The two adult occupants who had evacuated the home reported to
firefighters that a dog and cat were still missing. Firefighters entered
the home and rescued the two pets.
Firefighters gained access into the attic area and extinguished the
fire. The home also suffered smoke damage on the first floor.
Fire Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department determined that
the fire began on the wooden deck at the rear of the home where
improperly discarded smoking materials had ignited combustibles. The
fire extended from the wooden deck into the attic area. Damage estimates
to the home and its contents are in excess of $25,000.
