Columbia's Active Living by Design Partnership and Mayor Hindman each win national active living awards
								
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia's Active Living by Design (ALbD) Partnership, led by the PedNet Coalition and the Columbia/Boone County Health Department, received the 2005 Active Living by Design "High Gear" Award for building remarkable momentum in promoting active living and activity-friendly environments.  
	Some of the Partnership's achievements over the past year include:
*	establishment of nine (now 12) self-sustaining Walking School Bus teams
*	expansion of the Passport to Fitness program
*	a multimedia social marketing campaign
*	establishment of the Douglas Neighborhood Trail
*	over $350,000 in grants generated to support current and future activities
*	establishment of the Healthy Eating by Design initiative at West Boulevard Elementary School
	Additionally, Mayor Darwin Hindman was recognized for his unrelenting and effective leadership as an elected official and the active living legacy he has already left his community. Specific achievements credited to Mayor Hindman include:
*	pioneering the rails-to-trails movement
*	promoting the development of the MKT trail
*	directing the campaign to fund and build the ARC
*	promoting the charge for progressive new street construction standards
*	setting up the Mayor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health
*	establishing the Mayor's Challenge: Bike, Walk & Wheel Week
*	successfully lobbying with Senator Kit Bond to secure the $25 million national Non-Motorized Transportation Pilot Program grants
*	consistently biking and walking around town-modeling the behavior and showing the vigor that inspires others
	These awards were presented at the annual Active Living by Design national meeting held in Denver May 2-5.
