City campaign to cut holiday waste starts Nov. 16
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Every year between Thanksgiving and New
Years, Americans trash 2.3 billion greeting cards; thats 26,000
miles of cards or enough to circle the entire planet. Greeting cards are
not the only thing in the garbage. Americans throw away 25 million tons
from Thanksgiving to New Years, or 25 percent more trash than any
other time of year.
On Nov. 16, the city of Columbia Public Works Department kicks
off the 10th annual Use Less Stuff campaign, which urges all
citizens to reduce holiday waste.
It is very easy to cut the amount sent to landfills from
Thanksgiving to New Years. Trim the trash you are creating by
practicing the 4Rs: rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle. Here are a
few examples about how to use less stuff and save money this holiday
season.
Rethink your holiday purchases by buying rechargeable batteries
for toys and gadgets. Reduce trash by canceling unwanted mailings and
catalogs. Reuse gift bags, ribbon, boxes and packing materials. Recycle
your Christmas tree.
Become a leader in waste prevention. Visit our Web site at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com and search use less stuff for more tips.
If we all make a small effort to use less stuff, we can make a world of
difference.
