Management - (573) 874-7400

Outdoor warning siren replacement begins

COLUMBIA, MO (October 23, 2006) -- A siren replacement project
authorized by voters in a November 2005 public safety bond issue started
on Wednesday, Oct. 17. When complete, 22 sirens will be affected, with
eight of those sirens relocated to new areas of growth and development.
No area will lose siren coverage.

According to Columbia/Boone County Emergency Management Director James
P. McNabb, the work should be complete by the end of November.

McNabb said that the new sirens have a two-way reporting system that
can “poll” the sirens daily to test their functionality. Eventually,
this two-way system may be able to eliminate the need for monthly manual
audio testing.

McNabb said that advance public notice was important in assuring
citizens that bond issue proceeds would be spent wisely and that no area
would lose siren coverage. The Emergency Management Department held
public meetings and mailed information to affected neighborhoods. McNabb
invited citizens with questions to contact the department at
573-874-7400.
