Earth Day 2007 'Road to Sustainability'
COLUMBIA, MO (April 3, 2007) --

Date: Sunday, April 22, 2007
Rain date Sunday, April 29, 2007
This is the 37th anniversary of the first Earth Day held in 1970.

Time: The Kids’ Park and West Village will run from noon - 5 p.m. The
Street Fair, including Eco Avenue and Volunteer Way, will run from noon
- 6:30 p.m. The theater and music is scheduled from noon - 7 p.m.

Location: MU’s Peace Park located downtown along Elm Street between
Sixth and Ninth streets. Booths for the street fair will be set up on
adjacent streets.

Eco Avenue
Put that “Earth” back in Earth Day by visiting this new area of
environmental booths, displays and educational activities designed to
inform and inspire. This strip of booths has been designed to make it
easier for people to access environmental information and learn
practical tips to living more sustainably. Eco Avenue will be located on
Elm Street, just west of the intersection with Eighth Street, and open
from noon - 6:30 p.m.

The Sustainable Home
As part of Eco Avenue, we have pulled together some helpful information
for sustainable living. Explore eight 10 x 10 displays, including the
“garage,” the “yard,” the “kitchen,” and the “living
room” under the green canopies to discover some great ideas of how to
become greener in your own home! The Sustainable Home will be located at
Elm and Eighth Street, and open from noon - 6:30 p.m.

Kids’ Park: Family and Kid's Activities
Come along with your kids and explore the wonders of nature while
learning to help care for the planet in the Kids’ Park (MU’s Peace
Park) from noon - 5 p.m.
Dig Dirt, Build a Boat, Twine a Vine: Active play with nature's toys,
for toddlers, teens and adults.
Plant a Seed: Join the Missouri Master Gardeners to learn what plants
need. Start your own plants to take home and take care of this summer.
Run, Jump and Play: Nature play! Make bookmarks and leaf prints, run
with the Earth Ball and take the stilt challenge thanks to Columbia
Parks and Recreation.
Meet the Mudbugs: Join the Missouri Department of Conservation to
discover mudbugs (also known as crayfish or crawdads).
Stream Table: Learn where water wants to go with the Missouri River
Communities Network by t ying to steer a stream across a miniature
landscape
Make Friends With Worms: Learn "What Worms Want" and how to set up a
compost bin in your home or yard to make your kitchen waste magically
disappear - courtesy of Columbia Public Works.
Sort those Recyclables: Can't keep those recycling categories straight?
Check out some fun games to help you learn what goes where - courtesy of
the Columbia Public Works Department.

Volunteer Way: Annual Community Volunteer Fair
Join the biggest social movement in America today - volunteering! Over
100 million Americans volunteer billions of dollars worth of time and
services to local, state and national agencies and organizations. Dozens
of agencies and not-for-profit groups will have informational booths
ready to share how you can make a difference in one person's life or in
the life of your community by volunteering your time and talent. Explore
opportunities to enrich not just your life, but your family's lives by
volunteering as a family. Enrich your relationships with one another and
gain insights into challenges that other families face. Don't know where
to start? Check out the Voluntary Action Center's booth for ways to get
involved. Booths for Volunteer Way will be set up along the Eighth
Street circle drive next to MU’s Peace Park.

West Village
Don’t miss all the action in the park! The West Village will host a
variety of activities running all afternoon, geared toward family
interaction, including martial arts, yoga, dancing, drumming and music.
Kids of all ages will be able to join in the fun. Located on the west
side of MU’s Peace Park, the West Village activities will run from
noon - 5 p.m.

Music and Theater
Get ready for some of the most exciting entertainment performances in
the history of Columbia’s Earth Days! This year’s entertainment
schedule will include an Earth Day kick-off parade, environmental
conscience music, jazz combos, hip hoppers, Radio Theater, an eco
fashion show, and much more! Come hear Columbia's musical and theatrical
talent - covering a wide range of tastes, styles and influences.
Entertainment on the Seventh Street stage and Peace Park stage is
scheduled from noon - 7 p.m. There will be an Earth Day After Party at
Mojo’s at 7:30 p.m. for those who can’t get enough! Daily live
broadcast of the Earth Day Festival will also be on KOPN 89.5 FM. For
further details, contact Julie Baka at (573) 874-1139 or
juliebakakopn at yahoo.com.

Street Fair
And last, but not least, more than 200 booths will fill five blocks
with environmental education, non-profits, businesses, artisans and
government agencies. Sample the wares (and ideas) of hundreds of vendors
and organizations at the street fair. We have everything from
fluorescent light bulbs to fluorescent T-shirts, from saving energy to
saving souls. Nothing is too practical or too esoteric for the Annual
Earth Day Street Fair.
